ORIGIN AND HISTORY

Although Kurt has some origins with names such as Conrad, it has become its own name during a long history. The popularity of Kurt fell into a rather broad phenomenon in the Untied States, the United Kindgon and many European countries during the first quarter of the 20th Century. During World War I, many Germanic sounding names, Kurt included, dove in popularity. [1] Anti-German sentiment was so high during this period that Germanic-sounding names were widely replaced. Even the British Royal Family, whose name had Germanic roots, acquiesced and changed it from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor. Even dogs were not immune. The popular spitz became the American Eskimo. Kurt did not regain popularity until the 1940s, interestingly a time when the world was going into war again with Germany.

It is possible that Kurt is derived from forms of Curtis or Curtiss. Given what is known about language, letters and the form and function of certain words and sounds, this is possible. (It is interesting to note the complexity and the search for accuracy in these academic endeavors. There is even a rather in-depth study underway that is looking to determine the likelihood of interrelation between “Curtis” and “Curtiss,” so this research and these revelations are not taken lightly. What does seem clear, however, is that the possibility exist that Curtis (itself meaning polite, courteous and well-bred), may have a role in Kurt’s past and an etymological foundation in what it means today.
