The name Joshua originally appears in the Old Testament. Joshua was one of twelve sent to the land of Canaan by Moses as a spy, after Moses death Joshua followed him as the leader of the Israelite people.

Since 1900, the name Joshua has remained within the top 1000, but its popularity declined from 1900 to 1930, at which point it started a slow but steady rise to the top 100 most popular boy's names in 1970 and has remained as one of the most popular boy's names since that time.
