The name John comes from the Hebrew "Yohanan," which became the Greek, "Ioannes" and the Latin "Johanne."

In the Anglo-Saxon period of English history, John was considered a unique, religious name. It was rarely used outside of the Eastern Orthodox Church. It is the name of the two most important Testament characters. One was John the Baptist and the second was the apostle John brother, of the apostle James. The name was born by 23 popes, also the rulers of Hungary, Poland, Portugal and France. John is the most popular of the Christian names.

Since the time of the Crusades, John has been a common given name in English speaking countries. John, alternating with the name William was the most common name in England and English speaking North America from around 1550 until 1924, at which point it began to decline in popularity.
