ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Jesus (Gr. Iesous[1]) comes from the Hebrew name Jehoshua or Yehoshua[1], the same root as the name Joshua.[1]

Jesus is arguably one of the most popular names in history. Since attributed to the name of the Christian prophet and leader of Christianity, Jesus has been established as holy and reverential to many. In the religious sense, Jesus is regularly affiliated with the place he is believed to originated from and preached -- Jesus of Nazareth. Such geographical appendages are not uncommon. Jesus is also known as Jesus Christ and Christ Jesus.

POPULARITY

According to the Social Security Administration, has been one of the most popular names in the United States for the past 100 years. It is during the current decade, however, that Jesus has been its most popular. In the first few decades of the last century, Jesus consistently ranked in the 200 to 300 range – reaching an all-time low (for the last century, actually) of 343 in 1913. Jesus maintained this range of ranking until the 1970s when it began a steady climb into the 100s that has yet to reverse. By 1990, Jesus had broken the 100 mark and climbed to the 70s in 1995 – where it remains to this day (see chart below).

Usage of this name in the United States has largely been by Hispanic Americans.[1]

FACTS

The First Century prophet Jesus (Jesus Christ) was believed by those sharing in the Christian faith to be the son of God. His second name Christ is the etymological root of Christianity. Born of Mary through "immaculate conception," Jesus was born in Nazareth in order to address the sins of mankind. His preachings and following had significant impact to this day, and his birth is set at the date by which current Gregorian calendars are based. (B.C. for "Before Christ" and A.D. for "Anno Domini" or "in the year of our Lord.")
