ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Jane originally stems from the masculine name “John” meaning “God is gracious.” Jane is more directly derived from the French feminine names “Jehanne” and “Jeanne.” The Gaelic forms of Jane are “Sinead,” “Sine” and “Siubhan.” The Welsh form of Jane is “Sian.”

Jane was the name of the Queen of England in the 16th century.
