ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Jade stems from the hard, green or white precious stone of jadeite or nephrite. The name derived from the Spanish "piedra de ijada" meaning "stone of the side" as it was believed that the stone could cure pains in the side. The stone, often used for carvings, has also been called "stone of the colic" from the belief that it could cure colic. The Spanish passed the word on to the French, which was, subsequently, passed on to the English. Along the way, "Jade" also notoriously became slang for "prostitute."

The jade stone is used in jewelery, carvings, burial suits and weapons.
