ORIGIN AND HISTORY

Irving has its original etymological roots in Scotland and England where it was and is popular as a surname. Like many surnames, Irving assumed use as a first name as families married and its presence and existence became threatened. Originally, it served as a local name indicating someone and their family were from what was once the county of Dumfriesshire. There exists also a variant of the surname variant spelled Irvine, and from a slightly different location closer to Ayrshire. [1]

POPULARITY

According to the Social Security Administration, Irving has not ranked as one of the 1000 most popular names in the United States since 2005. The name Irving has been in steady decline in popularity since the 1970s and vanished completely from the list of top 1000 most popular names, or hovered close to it. Years it did not make the list include 1986, 1985, 1984, 1982 and 1977. Irving was much more popular 100 years ago or so. In 1908, for example, it ranked at 114th. It held steadily in the 100 range from then until about 1920. Then and going forward, it lost approximately 100 spaces per decade until the aforementioned dearth in the 1970s.

Social Security Administration - Empty rankings indicate the name was not among the 1000 most popular names for that year.
