Ike is a shortened form of the Hebrew name Isaac, which means "laughter"[1] or "he laughs."[1] It is more commonly a nickname, and is not given as a name on its own very often.

Ike may also be a nickname for names such as Isaiah, Ikechi or Ikenna, or any name that has the sound "eye" in it.[1]


In the United States, Ike was a popular given name in the 19th century, reaching as high as the 184th most popular name for baby boys in 1884. Ike remained moderately popular through the turn of the 20th century, but dropped to the lower ranks of the top 1000 chart by the 1920s.
