ORIGIN AND HISTORY

Helen is Greek in origin.

Helen of Sparta, also know as Helen of Troy, was the daughter of Zeus and Leda in Greek mythology. Aphrodite offers Helen as a bribe to a mortal named Paris, the Prince of Troy. Helen was already married to King Menelaus, and the pairing of Helen and Paris caused the Trojan War, which lasted over ten years. These events took place in the 11th Century BC, also known as the Mycenaean Age.^[1]

POPULARITY

As a girl's name, Helen has been among the top 300 names for over two decades. In 2007, the name was in the 348th place.^[1] In the early 1900s the name was among the top ten for girls, and remained that way until the 1930s, when it began to decline significantly, leveling off in the 1990s in the mid-300s.^[1]
