Heather is the name of a plant that is indigenous to Scotland. The word "heather" is derived from the Scots word "Haeddre." Haeddre traces back to the fourteenth century. Vast amounts of Scottish countryside are covered with heather moors: approximately 2 to 3 million acres of Heather Moors in the East and in addition to those in the South and West.[1]

Heather first appeared on the top 1000 most popular names chart in the United States in the year 1935. Popularity increased, and it was in the top 10 list for much of the 1970s and 80s, reaching a peak of the 3rd most popular girl's name in 1975. Popularity has tapered off, but it remains in the top 500. In 2007, it ranked at number 409.[1]
