ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Harry can be seen as a traditional English name, a nickname for the name Henry or an alternative version of Harrison, Harold or the French Henri. [1]
POPULARITY
The name Harry was extremely popular in the U.S. 100 years ago. From 1900-1909, the name Harry was the 13th most popular baby boys' name in the U.S.; in 2006, it ranks close to 600th! [1] The decline has been a steady one over the century, but Harry hasn't fallen off the list yet, so perhaps it's up for a resurgence in popularity.
In Britain, the name Harry has been on the move in the opposite direction. In 2006, Harry was the fifth most popular boys' name in Britain; this trend shows the complete opposite of its popularity in the U.S. The name is also gaining popularity in Ireland, New Zealand and Australia, although it is most popular in Britain. [1]
FACTS
The name Harry has a name day in Sweden; Harry is celebrated on the 10th of October each year. [1]
Harry Potter is the name of the main character in J.K. Rowling's series of seven books about wizards and wizardry. The books begin with Harry's first year at Hogwart's, the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and the series follows Harry through the seven years of school and development. The books made Rowling into a millionaire; she is also credited in getting a new generation interested in reading. [1]
Harry Chapin was a folk/rock musician whose name is not known by many, but some of his songs are in the mainstream without being attributed to him. His song 'Cat's in the Cradle' is widely known, but his story is not. He died before his 40th birthday in a car accident when his car was run over by a tractor trailer truck. He had veered into oncoming traffic; autopsy showed he'd suffered a heart attack, but it is unknown if the heart attack caused the accident or was a result of it. Before dying he left a legacy of stories told through music; he was also an influential humanitarian, raising money through concerts and other efforts. He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1987, posthumously, for his humanitarian work. [1]
