ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Hank is commonly thought to be a pet name or nickname for someone named Henry. This shortening of the name retained the meaning of Henry, meaning 'estate ruler' or 'ruler of the home'. ^[1] The name Hank can also be considered a nickname from the name John, although the source for this doesn't provide an explanation of how that could be traced.^[1]

The name Hank has certainly fallen in popularity in America; it no longer makes it onto the list of the 1,000 most popular baby boy names. It was last on the list in the decade 1980-1989, when it came in at the 940th most popular given name for baby boys. Earlier in American history it was more popular, but it currently isn't making the grade; perhaps it will make its way back onto the popular names list in the future.^[1]
