- Greta Garbo was born Greta Louis Gustafsson in Sweden. She grew up in on of Stockholm's poorest districts. Greta worked as a salesgirl for a department store that used her in a publicity film. That led to another short film roll in "Peter the Tramp." In 1923, Mauritz Stiller cast her in "The Atonment of Gosta Berling" which made her a minor star. Stiller became her mentor and lover. They went to Hollywood in 1924. Stiller returned to Sweden while Greta stayed on to become a superstar.[1]
