ORIGIN AND HISTORY

Origins of the word and name Grant vary. Although there is evidence that Grant was an aristocratic Scottish surname that was first used as a first name after the Reformation (c. 1517), it is not clear how much influence the verb form of the word grant took contributed to names. The Old French graunter along with the Latin crédéns and crédere: “to believe” are also present. To grant also means, of course, to gift. There is some speculation that grants, land grants and the granting of other powers and property stemmed from (and to) the grantor believed in. [1]

With varying degrees of popularity over the centuries in between, much later in the United States, it later became much more common in honor of Union Confederate general and later president Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885).[1]

Like many surnames, Grant moved further to the front as first and middle names as family last names became obscured through others through marriage. Although Grant’s etymology technically means “tall,” the name has long been associated with strength and formidability in general.
