ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Part of Gilbert’s history involves its introduction in England by the Normans. Gilbert was popular during medieval times, especially in England and Scotland, possibly due to the English St. Gilbert of Sempringham.
Gilbert was originally spelled in variations including Gislebert, Guilbert and Gilebert. The prefix "Gil-" derives from "gisil", meaning a noble youth, while the suffix, "-bert" comes from "beraht", meaning bright or famous. The diminutive, Gil, is popular as a given name or nickname and moreso than Gill, which sounded more like a fish.
It regained some level of popularity in the 1800s and serves as both a first name and a surname. [1]
