ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Gerald has in its roots Norman and English origins as a derivative of Fitzgerald. The name was so similar to Gerard that it almost fell out of use due to perceived redundancy. This similarity with Gerard is believed to be largely responsible for its practical elimination by the 13th Century. Interestingly, this trend of popularity of Gerard vs. Gerald was to completely reverse by the late 19th Century. Keeping the name alive, and largely responsible for its resurgence, were the Irish. Often, when a major political figure is elected, comes to prominence or is otherwise introduced, that name enjoys a surge in popularity during that period. Records of that, in various forms, can be found back thousands of years. Interestingly, however, the name Gerald encouraged no such spike during before and during the administration of United States President Gerald Ford. The name Gerald was the 102nd most popular name in the United States (according to the Social Security Administration) in 1973 and actually dropped to 131 by 1977, the end of his Presidency.
