ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Geneviève is of uncertain origin, however it’s generally thought to be Celtic, meaning “of the race of women,” “women of the people,” or “mother of the race,” derived from the French Geneviève “white wave”, which in turn comes from the Late Latin Genovefa. It began to be used in Britain in the 19th century.

- According to the science of numerology, people named Geneviève tend toward order and discipline. As logical thinkers, they must have a strict routine, and they are rarely spontaneous. They may have a short fuse when dealing with people who don’t value truth and justice as they do. Somewhat incongruously, they also tend to be easy-going, friendly, and intuitive peacemakers.

Geneviève Bujold (b. 1942) – Canadian actress.
Genevieve Caulfield (May 8, 1888 - December 12, 1972) – winner of the 1961 Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding, and recipient of a Presidential Medal of Freedom, presented by President John F. Kennedy. Blind from birth, Caufield spent more than 40 years in Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam helping the blind to overcome their status of useless baggage and become full and productive members of society.
St. Geneviève (abt. 422-512) – patron saint of Paris. Legend has it that when Geneviève was seven years old, St. Germanus visited her village of Nanterre (near Paris). He noticed her in the crowd, prophesied her future sanctity, and asked her if she wanted to become a bride of Christ. She replied that she did, and Germanus immediately consecrated her to God. Her parents died when she was 15, and she moved to Paris, where she became a nun.
As she got older, Geneviève became known for her severe austerity. She ate only twice a week and fasted the rest of the time. Not surprisingly, she had visions and made prophesies, many of which are said to have been fulfilled. In 451, when Atilla the Hun was marching on Paris, Geneviève convinced the Parisians not to flee their homes, but to fast and pray, saying that God would protect them. As the enemy got closer, the people began to turn against her, but in the end, Atilla turned his army south toward Orleans.
St. Geneviève is remembered for her generosity to the poor, and she’s a protector against disaster, fever, and excessive rain and drought. She died in 512 and is interred in the church of Sainte Geneviève in Paris. Her feast day is January 3.
