Gaston as a name has French origins. Most likely, its etymology traces to people (and families) “from Gascony,” a place name in France. Another less likely suggested origin of the name is “strong guest.”

Gaston, with an original spelling closer to Gascon, first appeared in France around the 12th century. The name became common among noble families including those of Foix and Béam. The name Gaston likely became more popular with the rise of Gaston, the Duke of Orleans (1608-1660) by fans and followers of his opposition to Cardinal Richelieu. [1]

According to the Social Security Administration, Gaston is not in the top 1000 names for any year of birth in the last 15 years.

However, Gaston did experience some degree of greater popularity in the earlier part of the last century:

Decade: 1930 - 1939 Rank: 997th

Decade: 1920 - 1929 Rank: 935th

Decade: 1910 - 1919 Rank: 766th

Decade: 1900 - 1909 Rank: 825th[1]

Surprisingly, and despite its French origins, Gaston is not and has not been a popular name in France for some time. However, internationally, Gaston does hold the following levels of popularity for the following years:
