Gareth, or Gahareet is believed to date back to at least 1593. Origins for Gareth indicate it may mean “old” or “gentle.” The basis for this position is its believed derivative from Celtic legend and the Welsh name Geraint, itself derived from the Latin for “old”.
Another derivative is Garth, believed to be either a contraction of Gareth or with Norse (Scandinavian) origins of the surname meaning “enclosure.” One of its first uses as a first name dates from Florence Barclay’s novel The Rosary of 1909. 
According to the Social Security Administration, Gareth is not in the top 1000 names for any year of birth in the last 15 years.
