When applied to the angel, it means "He-Man from God"
In Judaeo-Christian, Gabriel is one of the two highest ranking angels. He is one of the few angels (also Michael and Raphael) mentioned by name in the Old Testament. Gabriel is the angel of annunciation, death, mercy, resurrection, revelation and vengeance and presides over Paradise, beleived to sit at the left side of God.
Mohammed claimed the Koran was dictated to him by Gabriel (Jibril), the spirit of truth. In the Talmud, Gabriel struck Sennacherib's hosts "with a sharpened scythe which had been ready since Creation." Gabriel is also known as the prince of justice in rabbinic literature. According to Jewish legend, Gabriel saved three holy men (Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah) from the furnace.
