ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Frank is primarily an English name, although its roots can be traced back to a German tribe that was called the Franks. The name of the tribe could come from a certain kind of spear that they carried, and therefore only those who carried the weapon were called Franks. Alternatively, the tribal name could mean that those who carry the weapon are free men. Either way, the name of this Germanic tribe (somewhat ironically) later became the name of France.
Frank is sometimes considered a name in its own right, and sometimes considered a shortened form of the name Franklin. It is also considered a diminutive form of Francis or the Italian Francesco.
POPULARITY
The name Frank has lost ground as a popular name since the 1950’s in the U.S., but was quite a popular name from about 1850-1950. Although the trend is a falling one, the name Frank remains high in the top 1000 baby names in America each year even though it is no longer in the top 200 baby names. [1]
FACTS
Frank is not only a proper noun (name), but it’s also an adjective (‘to be frank’ with someone is to be quite honest) and can be made into an adverb (‘frankly, I just don’t care’). As such, Frank can be used as a word (such as in Scrabble) whereas most names cannot.
