ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Francis stemmed from the the Middle Latin “Franciscus” meaning “a Frenchman.” It is a derivation of the Old French “franc” meaning “free,” which was, subsequently,transferred to “Francus” meaning “a Frank” or “a freeman.” The Italians later used the form “Francesco,” which was transferred to the Old French form “Franceis.” The Scottish Gaelic form of Francis is “Frang.”

St. Francis of Assisi was a founder of the Franciscan Order. He is the patron saint of animals. St. Francis Xavier co-founded the Jesuit order.
