ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Ewan is “the usual Anglicized form in Scotland of Gaelic Eóghan.” Ewan is used in most of what were the “colonies” of Great Britain such as Ireland, England itself and Australia. Eóghan is of disputed origin and may mean either yew or born (or "born of the yew.") It is not clear if yew is intended as the flora or as a derivative or bastardization of ewe, meaning sheep.[1] [1] [1]
POPULARITY
According to the Social Security Administration, Ewan has not been in the top 1000 list of most popular names in the United States since at least 1880. This is the first year that that the Social Security Administration first made such names rankings available. Although never particularly popular in the United States, Ewan has enjoyed steady popularity in countries in Europe and the United Kingdom closer to its place of origin. In Scotland, for example, Ewan has ranked as highly as the 36th most popular name there in 1998 and was 49th in 2006 (the last year information was available). Ewan also ranks steadily in the top 100 most popular names in England, and has since the year 2000. Its highest ranking there was at 83rd. In some of the British “colonies,” Ewan tends to rank highest in the countries closest to the United Kingdom. In Canada, for example, it reached 211th in popularity in 2003 yet only reached a high of 289th in Australia (in 2001). Somewhat inexplicably, Ewan also show a respectable popularity ranking in Belgium, where it hit a high of 631st most popular in 2003.[1]
