ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Eric derives from Old Norse "Eirikr" meaning "eternal ruler." It is a combination of "ei" meaning "ever" or "always" and "rikr" meaning "ruler." In Germany, it is also considered a short form of the name "Frederick." Some believe the name came to the Old Norse from the German as a combination of "ehre" meaning "honor" and "rik" meaning "king."

The name Erik was borne by nine Danish Kings. Viking invaders, and subsequently, Scandinavian settlers, introduced the name to the British Isles before the Norman Conquest. The name was not commonly used by English speaking countries until the 19th century.
