Name: elton Origin: English,, Meaning (no case): other, foreign enclosure, settlement

The name Elton is considered to be exclusively English and is one of many surnames that became used as a first name. Elton is believed to have originated in the Middle Ages (Old English) as a combination of a masculine personal name and the geographically descriptive name used to identify a certain place type in England. Place types differ from place names as they indicate a physical description of the territory rather than a mapped or pinpointed and recognized city or town. In this case, its etymology indicates that Eltons were those named Ella (as a surname) possibly meaning "other" or "foreign" and from a “tun” or enclosure or settlement. If this is accurate, Elton's origins described foreigners from settlements.[1] [1]

According to the Social Security Administration, Elton has not been one of the top 1000 most popular names in the United States since 1990. During that year, it ranked 963rd. Elton was at its most popular during the earliest part of the last century, steadily ranking in the high 200 and low 300 range from about 1908 through the mid 1930s. Elton achieved its highest ranking the last 100 years in 1915 when it ranked 278th. After the 1930s, Elton steadily declined in popularity and reached a low of 818th by 1969. Until this past decade, this was the lowest ranking Elton had achieved in the past 100 years. Then, during the 1970s and possibly attributable to the popularity of pop music singer Elton John, Elton experienced something of a spike in popularity. From the previously mentioned low in 1969, Elton rose steadily through the 1970s to a high ranking of the 503rd most popular name in the country in 1974. This was about the time he released one of his best selling albums “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” and appeared in the musical motion picture Tommy. After the 1970s, the name Elton declined and after failing to rank in the top 1000 most popular names in the country from 1987 through 1989, the name vanished completely by 1991.[1]

  • The Elton John AIDS Foundation is one of the most successful fund raising and AIDS awareness charities in the world. Since it was founded in 1992, it has raised over $125 million for 55 countries.

  • Elton, LA is a town in Jefferson Davis Parish. It occupies 1.6 square miles of land.[1]
