The name Ella has origins in Old English, German and Greek. In German its source could be Alja (meaning "entire"), an Ancient Germanic name, or any of the various names containing the Germanic element ali (meaning "foreign", "other"). It is unknown in which language the name Ella first appeared. Ella is also a diminutive of feminine names beginning with El or ending with -ella (Eleanor, Ellen, Elvira, etc).

Ella is a very popular female first name and a very rare surname. It was the 21st most popular name for girls in the US in 2006. In the UK Ella held the 9th spot in 2007. It is also a very popular name in Australia, Canada, Sweden, Norway, and New Zealand.
