The name Edward derives from the Old English “Eádweard” meaning “protector of wealth,” which is a combination of "ead" meaning “riches,” “prosperity,” or “fortune” and "weard" meaning “guardian” or “protector.” Edward was brought to Ireland by the Anglo-Normans. Irish forms of Edward are “Eadbhard” (traditionally) and “Eamonn” (modernly).

Eight Kings of England have borne the name Edward, including Saint Edward the Confessor in the 11th century, who gave rise to the name.
