The name Ed is seen by many as a shortened name for Edward. However, in English, Ed is a name in its own right and can be used as a given name for boys. Of course, it is also possible to use the name Ed as a nickname if someone is named Edward. In English history, the name Edward has a powerful reputation, there being a line of eight Edwards in English/British history. ^[1]

The name Ed no longer features among the top 1000 most popular boys' names in America. It was last on the charts many decades ago, for example scoring number 438 in the 1960's. Apparently, it's just fallen off the charts since 1970, because it has never made it back on to the list of most popular boys' names in America. ^[1] The name Edward, on the other hand, still makes it onto the list every year in the U.S., coming in at number 143 in 2006. ^[1]

Edward is also a popular name around the world, most popular spots are: 41st as a boys' name in Britain (2006), 73rd as a boys' name in Australia (2003) and 110th as a boys' name in Canada (2003). ^[1]
