[edit] ORIGIN AND HISTORY

Drake was most likely a surname later adopted as a first name. Its popularity no doubt increased with the popularity and exploits of Sir Francis Drake. Although still an important (present) surname in the United States, it maintains steady popularity as a first name. Available definitions consistently define its origins as dragon, although some suggest that rather than its origins having to do with an actual dragon, it may refer to families that lived near a tavern or hotel called “Dragon.” With name designation so closely tied to geographical origins, this would not be unusual.
