HISTORY & ORIGIN
Hebrew, David[1], from dowd, to love
King David,(c.1037 BC - 967 BC) reigned Judah c.1007 BC - 1005 BC. He was the second king of the united Kingdom of Israel. He was the first person on record to have the name "David." David rose from the status of a poor shepherd to become the greatest leader of Israel, wittily defeating the terrifying giant Goliath, and composing poetry and psalms, the latter ones being traditionally presented in the Bible.
Following the religious direction, the second historically known David is a 6th century saint from Wales. Curiously enough, in the next few centuries the most prominent people holding the name were kings David I and David II reigning over Scotland. Not until the 18th century came another famous figure, David Hume, a Scottish philosopher who immensely influenced philosophical movements of the 1700's.
POPULARITY
Following on the biblical King David of Israel, in Scotland the name David is regarded as royal, explaining why the first popular Davids came from that cold and windy country. Today, it has been continuously among the top one thousand names given by parents in United States since 1880, reaching it's popularity peak in the '60s and '70s, when artists like David Bowie, David Cassidy, David Hockney, and David Lean were well-known among the population. Since 1948, the name has been in the top five and stayed there until the beginning of '90s. It remained in the top twenty and ended the year 2005 as the 15th most popular boy name.
