ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Darren is of Gaelic origin, and it is typically seen in Gaelic speaking countries such as Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It means “great,” or 'little great one' in Irish and in Welsh, it can mean “burnt land” or “hill”. It most probably originated from the surname Darren which is no longer common but there were a number of families with the name up until the 1870's.

It was not until the 20th century when the name of Darren started being used more often as a first name. In England, the variation of Darren is Darryl.

POPULARITY

As a first name, Darren once enjoyed a great popularity. In the United States, it entered the census records around the 1930s and reached its peak in the 1960s. At that point, it very slowly decreased in popularity until the 2000s when it saw a slight resurgence. For example, in the year 1999, it ranked 283rd and in 2004 and 2006, it ranked 337nd and 361st respectively.[1]

In Ireland and Scotland, the name was more popular but in those countries too, it has witnessed a decline in usage.

The name Darren is no longer a common last name in the United States, Ireland, England, or Wales.

The name Darren has not been used often extensively. Perhaps one of the most uses of the name Darren is in the television show Bewitched. Darrin (spelled with an “i”) Stephens was the name of the husband who was married to central character and witch Samantha.
