In both the Hebrew Bible and Old Testament, the "Book of Daniel" tells of the Israeli Daniel, who prophesied and told his interpretations of royal dreams as the advisor to Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar.

POPULARITY

Daniel has always been relatively popular as a boy's name, and in 2006 it ranked as the sixth most popular name in America. It is similarly ranked ninth in the United Kingdom, and is used in more than a dozen different countries.

NAMESAKES

• "Daniel" is a song composed and recorded by Elton John, with lyrics by Bernie Taupin. It is a fictional story about a blinded Vietnam veteran who flies off to Spain after returning home from the war, to escape the tribulations of dealing with the American public. The vet's younger brother tells the story.

• Jack Daniel's (founded in Lynchburg, Tennessee by Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniels in 1866), is a popular brand of whiskey usually associated with Rock'n'Roll and biker culture. Famous drinkers of the award-winning whiskey include Frank Sinatra and the band Lynyrd Skynyrd.

• Daniel Boone (October 22, 1734 - September 26, 1820) was an American pioneer and hunter, fabled in early history as the quintessential frontiersman. His exploits include fighting in the Revolutionary War, settling the state of Kentucky, and rescuing his daughter from Indians.
• Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis (born April 29, 1957 in London, England) is an award-winning actor who also does woodworking. Day-Lewis is known for his comprehensive role research and for staying in character during a shooting, having starred in films like My Left Foot, The Boxer, and Gangs of New York.
• Daniel Pearl (October 10, 1963 - February 1, 2002) was a Wall Street Journal writer from Princeton, New Jersey. His kidnapping and murder while working in Pakistan received world-wide coverage. He was also a talented musician.
• Daniel Wroughton Craig (born November 11, 1968 in Chester, Cheshire, England) survived a childhood of near-poverty. Craig attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and eventually acted in such films as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Road to Perdition, and Casino Royale, where he became the first blond James Bond.
• Daniel Jacob Radcliffe (born July 23, 1989 in Fulham, London, England) plays the title role in the wildly popular Harry Potter movie series. Although a bit of a prankster, Radcliffe remains a well-adjusted teenager, as he makes a point of never reading or watching his media reviews or interviews.
