The name Dakota originates from the Siouan word “dakota” meaning “allies” or “to be thought of as friends.”

The Sioux and Lakota Native Americans of the northern Plains and northern Mississippi valley are responsible for the origin of the name, from whom it was borrowed, their Siouan name being “Dakota.” The name stems from the Ojibway meaning “enemy” or “snake,” ironically.
