Dagmar has Swedish, Norwegian and Danish roots. From the Scandinavian, the root “dag” means day and mar can be interpreted a number of ways resulting in “Day Maiden” or “Bright Day.” The Danish version leans more closely to name meaning “Dane’s Joy.”

Dagmar is the name of a several princesses of Denmark and a famous Portuguese royal who became queen consort of Denmark (Infanta Berengária of Portugal and then, Queen Dagmar). [1]
