ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Cordelia comes from two sources: Latin and Irish. In Latin, the root of the name is "cor," meaning "heart" and the name may possibly come from the French phrase coeur de lion, "heart of the lion."[1]
Cordelia may also stem from the old Welsh name Creiddylad, which means "jewel of the sea" or "daughter of the sea."[1] Creiddylad was engaged to one man but abducted by another, and wars broke out in her name. An early King Arthur story, "Culhwch and Olwen," depicts Arthur bringing a truce to the war by declaring that they will battle only on May Day, and every May Day, until the end of time.[1]
Queen Cordelia was a British Queen, first immortalized in accounts by Geoffrey of Monmouth, and later in the Shakespeare play King Lear.[1]
