ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Christine has English and French origins and also offers the form Christina. Christine is believed to be derived from Christian, as the feminine version, and is related to Christianity. Its Gaelic origins are Ciorstaidh, Curstaidh, Ciorstag and Ciorsdan. Despite having its roots there, Christine was not overly popular in Britain until the end of the 19th century. The name was more tightly tied to and prevalent in Scotland, but it has expanded throughout the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Canada.[1]
POPULARITY
According to the Social Security Administration, Christine has consistently been one of the most popular names in the United States. Based on rankings of the top 1000 most popular names in the country over the past 100 years, Christine has only recently begun a noticeable drop. With a high watermark period during the 1940s through the early 1990s, Christine regularly enjoyed being in the top 100 most popular names in the country. In 1952, Christine was ranked 20th and maintained that range, even beating it in 1972 at 16th. It is somewhat rare that a name can so transcend the decades consistently, but Christine remained very popular until recently. The mid 1990s saw the lowest ranking in the past 100 years (in the 150 range). By the turn of this century, Christine dropped from 217th in 2000 to 518th in 2007 (see chart below).
