ORIGIN AND HISTORY

Christina, most commonly a girl's name, originated from Latin, though the name Christane is said to be of French origin.[1] A number of royals have been named Christina, most notably Christina of Sweden, who reigned as Queen of Sweden for about 22 years.

POPULARITY

Christina is a very popular first name for girls, and is very rarely used as a boy's name[1]. In 2006 in the United States, its rank was 158. In 2005 the rank was 136, while in 2004 its rank was 123.

FACTS

There are multiple Saint Christina's, the most notable of them being Christina the Astonishing. Christina the Astonishing lived a colorful existence—she suffered a seizure so great that everyone thought she was dead. She awakened during her funeral Mass, and according to legend, levitated to the roof of the church, claiming to have seen heaven, hell and purgatory. Her life following that incident was strange—she claimed to 'smell the sin' on people, and would hide in odd places (like ovens and cupboards) to avoid it. She also reportedly could handle fire without harm.[1]

Christina of Sweden was Queen of Sweden from 1632 (when she was six) until she abdicated in 1654, though the exact reasons why she abdicated still remain a mystery. Her reign was fraught with problems about taxation and excessive spending. Against the advice of her adviser Axel Oxenstierna (who had ruled in her stead until she came of age) in 1648 she initiated the end of the Thirty Year War. She was noted for her interests in the arts and for scholarly pursuits.[1] There are accounts of her being raised as a prince, as commanded by her father.[1]
