Charlotte is the feminine form of "Chariot" and "Charles" (full grown, a man, free man). While many interpret Charlotte as "woman" or "feminine," others interpret the name to have "masculine" ties due to its connection with the name Charles. Thus, combining the two, some have defined Charlotte as meaning "strong woman." The name originated in France. The Gaelic form of Charlotte is Searlait.

One of the most notable early namesakes was Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818), wife of George III. Charlotte, North Carolina, USA is named after Queen Charlotte. It is also suspected that Charlotte dessert is named after the Queen.
