ORIGIN AND HISTORY

In English, the name Carolyn is considered a female version of the name Charles. Other derivations are the anglicized version of the French name Caroline, which means joy. The spelling on this page is the English spelling and the spelling remains Caroline in many countries of the world as well as being a form used in America right alongside Carolyn. While these two female names are spelled differently, they are also pronounced quite differently. Many people pronounce them interchangeably, however.

The female given name Carolyn is currently falling in popularity in the US. It currently stands at number 517 (2006), but the name has had a slow fall down to number 517. The name has never fallen off the list of 1000 most popular female given names since it peaked in the 1940s as the 12th most popular female given name.
