ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Although Carl is also the German and Scandinavian form of Charles, it has long been a first (and surname) in its own right. And although England (and what was and is the area of the United Kingdom over the centuries) has it fair share of kingly Charles’, Karl has its own fair claims to aristocracy. Keeping in mind the geographic extent of Germanic languages during this same period, Karl has been the name of at least seven Austrian emperors and others in what are now the areas of Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. The influence over the latter three can likely be attributed to the fact that Karl (as król, král, and király respectively) refers to “emperor.” [1]
