From the Gaelic Brianna as a feminine for of Brian seems to be a more modern spelling. However, the name Brian is traceable to the 11th century to an Irish king named Brian Baru. The link to the Celtic languages is due to the impression that the name is derived from the Celtic word bre' meaning hill and by extension noble, or high.
