Blair, which is of Scottish and Gaelic origin, means "field, plain." It was originally a Scottish surname but is now used as a given name. The surname was regional, referring to places named by the Gaelic "blàr." Beginning in the early 1980s, Blair began to be used more as a girl's name than as a boy's name.[1]

POPULARITY

Blair was a moderately popular boy's name throughout the twentieth century. Its highest position on the top 1000 chart in the United States was during 1953 and 1954 when it ranked at number 435. Popularity declined in the 1980s and Blair last appeared on the boy's chart in 1995.[1]

As a girl's name, Blair first appeared on the chart in 1980, and while it saw top 500 popularity during the 80s, it last appeared on the chart in 2000, ranking at 972.[1]
