Bill is a diminutive of the the name William, derived from the old Germanic name Wilhelm which comprises the words "willio," meaning will or desire and "helma," meaning helmet or protection. William, historically, has strong regal associations: several rulers of Germany, Prussia and England have all borne the name. In England the name was introduced by the Normans and the famous William the Conqueror, who was the first Norman king of England.
