ORIGIN & HISTORY

Bill is a diminutive of the the name William, derived from the old Germanic name Wilhelm which comprises the words "willio," meaning will or desire and "helma," meaning helmet or protection. William, historically, has strong regal associations: several rulers of Germany, Prussia and England have all borne the name. In England the name was introduced by the Normans and the famous William the Conqueror, who was the first Norman king of England.

After William the Conqueror's ascension to the throne, William became the most common male name in Britain.Since 1880 the name has always been in the top thousand most popular names for new born baby boys in the United States and although it has been slipping through the popularity stakes, it still ranked, as of 2006, as the tenth most popular name for new born boys in the US, it ranked as the eighth most popular name in Britain in the same year.
