ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Augustus is from the Latin word for “venerable,” “consecrated,” “majestic,” or “grandeur,” definitions it holds in its non-name adjectival version. Its roots can be traced to “augere” (to increase). Some research indicates that Augustus was only a Latin word meaning “great” until the Renaissance, where some Germanic royalty used it as a name within their dynasties. With the heavy Germanic family lines behind the royal families of England, Augustus remained with the Hanoverian dynasty when it moved into England. [1]
