ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Ashley is of English origin and refers to someone who is related in some way to the ash tree/field/meadow. The name was first used to refer to someone who came from there. As with many such names, the name is originally a male given name and has only in recent times become a female name (in some parts of the world). In the UK, the name is still primarily a male name, but in the US, it is much more common as a female given name. [1]
POPULARITY
The name Ashley is extremely popular in the US, and has been for a few decades. The name is much more commonly used for girls than for boys, but the name makes it onto both the 1000 most popular girls' names and the 1000 most popular boys' names. For girls, the name currently ranks number 12; ten years ago it ranked 3rd. In the decade 1990-1999, the name is the first ranked female given name. In the 1980s, the name was ranked fourth as a female given name.[1]
As a given name for boys, the name made it onto the 1000 top names for quite some time, but the last time it made the list was in 1994 at number 940. Perhaps because it is so popular for baby girls it is less used for baby boys now.[1]
As a girl's name, Ashley was 7th most popular in Canada in 2000 and 46th most popular in Australia (2005). As a boy's name, Ashley was number 65 in Britain (1999) and number 81 in Australia (2001). [1]
