ORIGIN AND HISTORY
The name Arthur is believed to be of Celtic origin deriving from artos meaning “bear.” It may have also derived from the Celtic Goddess of bears – “Artio.” Some suggest it has links back to the Irish Gaelic art meaning “stone” or the Welsh arth gwyr meaning "bear man." The Romans used the form “Artorius,” which may be partly responsible for the modern form of Arthur. The Gaelic form of Arthur is “Artur,” which has been used in Ireland since the 7th century. The Scottish Gaelic form of Arthur is “Artair.”
Most famously, the name belonged to the 6th century British King Arthur, leader of the knights of the round table. Guinevere was his wife and Uther Pendragon and Igraine were his parents.
