ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Although evidence indicated Archibald is Scottish, its roots may lie as far afield as a Norman/French version of a Germanic name Ercanbald (and sometimes found in Old English as Eorcanbald). Both and related versions include ercan for genuine and bald for bold or brave. Once primarily a surname, strongly in use by the Scottish Campbell and Douglas clans, it was later used as a first name as a way to protect and preserve the family lines and heritage associated with it. Its most common variant, Archie, has become significantly more popular and is the main version of the name used. [1] [1]
POPULARITY
According to the Social Security Administration, Archibald has not been ranked in the top 1000 most popular names in the United States since 1925 – where it ranked 836th. Its highest ranking in the past century has only been 556th in 1912, and it only ranked within the top 1000 19 times in the last century. Archie, however, has been more popular longer and more recently. Although it has not ranked in the top 1000 names in the United States since 1988, when it was 886th, it consistently placed within the top 400 names for over half of the last century. With a high ranking of 98 in 1907 and its lowest ranking of 886th in 1988 (the last year in the top 1000), Archie held steady for most of the 20th Century.
