ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Arcadio means "a man from Arcadia." It was possibly a surname before it was a first name, though there is limited information about the origins of the surname. Arcadio comes from Arcadius, a Latin form of Arkadios.[1] The name Arkadios comes from the Greek arktos, which means "bear."[1] Arcadia was a region of Greece, and the term is now used to describe any peaceful and pastoral area.[1]
Another definition offered for the name Arcadio is "adventurous."[1]

FACTS
- Arcadio is one of the names shared by many of the male characters in the Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel One Hundred Years of Solitude. These characters include José Arcadio Buendia, José Arcadio Segundo and Arcadio. During the novel, Garcia Marquez writes this meditation upon names, from the point of view of the matriarchal character Ursula:
- "Throughout the long history of the family the insistent repetition of names had made her draw some conclusions that seemed to be certain. While the Aurelianos were withdrawn, but with lucid minds, the José Arcadios were impulsive and enterprising, but they were marked with a tragic sign."[1]
