ORIGIN AND HISTORY

Throughout history it was a popular belief that St. Anne was the mother of the Virgin Mary. There are no biblical references to support this belief.

The name Anne was common amongst royalty. Two queens of England bore the name Anne, a queen of France, an Empress of Russia and in more recent times we have an English royal member bearing the name, Princess Anne. Due to the popularity of royalty, the common faithful to the ruler named their daughters Anne too. Note: Anne is the French form of the name Hannah.

POPULARITY

The name was very popular throughout English history whenever royalty bore the name. It has remained in the top 500 girls names since the beginning of the 20th century, gaining it's highest rank between 1910-1920 ranking at number 57 for most popular. This may have been due to the release of L.M Montgomery's famous character Anne of Green Gables, a series of literature released in 1908. The name Anne declined in popularity after the surge, but still remains one of the most popular female middle names to this day.

• King Henry the Eighth had two wives named Anne, Anne Boleyn and Anne of Cleves.
• 'Queen Anne' is a style of furniture that originated in the court of Louis the fifteenth.
• 'Queen Anne's Lace' is another name for a wild growing carrot, named after Queen Anne of Britain who reigned between 1702 and 1714.

NAMESAKES

• Princess Anne of England was the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth 2nd. She is the only royal person to have ever competed in the Olympic games. Princess Anne is also currently 10th in line for royal succession of the throne.
• Anne of Green Gables was a popular character from a book written by L.M Montgomery in 1908. It was later made into a TV series, and is still considered a classic piece of literature.
• Little Orphan Annie was a full page comic strip created by Harold Gray (1894-1968). The plot was eventually turned into a radio show, a musical on Broadway musical and a movie.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

• Anne Frank was made famous by the diary she kept while hiding from the Germans through World War II. She was later found and transferred to a concentration camp for Jewish persons called Bergen-Belsen. Anne Frank is said to have died from typhus in the concentration camp. The diary was later passed onto her father Otto Frank, who survived his family and he later had it published.
• Anne Boleyn was the second wife of King Henry the Eighth. She was beheaded in 1536 on order from her husband, for reasons of adultery, incest and treason. It is popular belied that she was innocent of all charges.
• Anne Bronte (born January 17, 1820) was the youngest of the three Bronte sisters (Charlotte, Emily) she was also a British novelist and poet.
• Anne Rice, an author famous for the Interview With A Vampire series, and her other series The Lives of The Mayfair Witches.
• Anne Geddes is a photographer known for her unique portraits of babies.
• Anne Heche is an American actress who gained popularity not only through her acting, but also being the life partner of comedienne Ellen DeGeneres. Their breakup became the focus of much media scrutiny in 2000.
