POPULARITY
According to the Social Security Administration, Amadeus was not in the top 1000 names in popularity for since at least 1977. This even holds true during the years 1984-1985 after the release of the immensely popular, Oscar-winning movie Amadeus directed by Milos Foreman.
Amadeus really came into the American, and some would say world lexicon with the release of the play and movie "Amadeus" in the 1980s. Although a well-known and respected composer, his name was elevated beyond those of his composer contemporaries such as Beethoven, Bach, Chopin and Haydn with these treatments of his life. Both works were wildly successful and brought pop culture attention to the man and his music. Interestingly, before these works were thrust upon the entertainment world, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was better known as Mozart. By giving such a personal insight into the composer's life, despite the arguments about its factual substance, many built (or found) a relationship with him through Amadeus.
